Root Beer, a unique drink produced from a blend of 14 herbs, spices, barks, and berries, was originally sold at a stand opened by Roy Allen on June 20, 1919, in Lodi, California. Allen then forms a business partnership with one of his employees, Franks Wright, and the two of them open three additional locations in Houston not long after. They decided to brand their Root Beer under the well-known A&W moniker.

In Sacramento, Allen creates the first "car hop" restaurant service in the country, and a year later, the A&W trademark is registered. Establishing the first franchise restaurant chain in the United States, he starts selling franchises for A&W drive-ins and vending booths in 1925.

The First A&W restaurant in Bangladesh opened on December 15, 2004.
